Petite Accessories Top Tips

By Vikki • Jul 16th, 2008 • Category: Accessories, Features, Petite Clothing Tips

Here are my top tips for those finishing touches for petite ladies.

If wearing court shoes opt for a pointed toe instead of a round toe it lengthens your legs.

Jessica Simpson Petite

Jessica Simpson shows this perfectly with her fantastic patent leather shoes and at 5′3″ she’s as petite as they come… although you’d never think it.

Don’t wear T-Straps, bows, or heavy buckles on your footwear because it creates a wide, chunky effect.

Poor Melissa Joan Heart I’m always picking on this outfit, but with these aweful platforms cutting her off at her ankle it makes her look about a foot shorter than she is.

Do wear flats, but keep your outfit simple, hem lines on or above the knee or skinny jeans.

Reese Witherspoon shows this pefectly with her simple outfit and fantastic animal print pumps.

Stay away from belts that are too wide or colourful, go for slim belts as they won’t overwelm your frame.

Cheryl Cole shows this perfectly with her super short yellow dress and black slimline belt which sets it off perfectly.

So thoses are the rules you don’t have to stick to them but I would try and keep them in mind when you’re looking around the shops.

Maxi or Long Dresses - petite friend or foe?

By Vikki • Jul 4th, 2008 • Category: All, Features, Petite Clothing Tips, Petite Dress

So I’ve been searching the net to find out what the opinion is on the Maxi dress for petite women and what I’ve figured out is that we’d all love to wear them, but the sad fact is that we just shouldn’t… unless you want to wear stilts at the same time… that would work wouldn’t it??

Here is the best example I could find of a celeb who, like us, really wants to wear maxi dresses but really shouldn’t - Melissa Joan Heart. At 5′2″ she is definitely petite but where did she get these frocks from?

petite maxi dresspetite maxi dress tips

Now if I was to pick the perfect example of a petite outfit, it would have to be this one from Eva Longoria. The nude peep toes give the legs length as mentioned in this post. Her fabulous dress falls just about the knee giving her full length of both her body and her legs and the v-neck elongates her neck giving the illusion on height.

Eva also does the Maxi dress well but I think this is more to do with her slender frame more than anything. However there are some key differences between Eva’s dress and Melissa’s above.

Petite fashionpetite maxi dress

Petite Maxi Dress top tips:

Keep the line of the dress straight

As you can see from the pictures above Melissa’s dresses come out from her waist where are Eva’s skims her body giving her length to her body.

Keep hems long - to the floor even

Eva’s hem on her dress is touching the floor giving the illusion of height where as the black dress Melissa is wearing cuts her off at the ankles making her look shorter.

Simple necklines

Melissa’s black dress and Eva’s maxi dress are both good examples of what the top of a maxi dress should look like where as Melissa’s other long dress has a wider line over the shoulders making her look more top heavy and this follows down her body making her look larger than she is.

So that’s that… I’d keep away from them but if you’re anything like me then there’s no telling you! Stick to these 3 key steps and you’ll be alright!

Love ya!

Petite style guide… how I secretly make myself taller

By Vikki • May 14th, 2008 • Category: All, Features, Petite Clothing Tips

From Victoria Taylor to Victoria Becham in five easy steps!

Victoria Beckham is by no means tall, at 5′3″ with no shoes on she is a perfect petite like us, but I always thought she was much taller so over the last few weeks I’ve tried to take on her fashion tips to make myself look taller. And here is what I’ve done…

victoria beckham

Massive heels! I generally stick to 3 inchers which are just low enough to be comfortable but high enough to make me look longer and stand taller.

Get them took up! My sleeves on my petite suits and my hems, a good tailor or clothing alteration service like Quick Stitch that I mentioned in an earlier post make the most of my petite limbs by not hiding them under loads of material.

Be a low rider! I try and stick to low rise pants as they make my body look longer, which balances out my legs. (but not too low, nobody likes their thong hanging out!)

Long Hems, Long Legs… I know I said to take them up but I never go too extreme when I go shorter. I always try to let my hem skim an inch above the floor covering most of my shoe… I know what you’re thinking… what a waste of a beautiful shoe being hidden, I agree but the extra couple of inches are worth it!

Massive Hair! As you know I’ve got a bob so when I go out and want to look my best (and by best I mean tall and slender) so I do a little back combing to give me a taller hair do. If you have long hair you could always try a high pony tail.

Put all of these together and I could be about 10 inches taller! lol

OK so I maybe don’t do these all the time but used in combination it definitely improves my confidence and makes me feel better about myself.

What petite clothing tips do you have for our readers? Add a comment below and let us know (I know that rhymed!)

Dorothy Perkins brings you Gok’s top tips

By Vikki • May 11th, 2008 • Category: All, Dorothy Perkins, Features

Oh my god! Dorothy Perkins have gone one step beyond with this great section dedicated to Dainty Diva’s which has been devised and hosted by the great Gok Wan from How to Look Good Naked!!

If you go to the Dainty Divas section of the site then you will find all his tips on how to dress for your body type.

This is of course a ploy for you to buy from Dorothy Perkins range and Gok looks less than impressed by this purely commercial tip generation, but I do believe that there are some good tips in there and so great peices from Dorothy Perkins for the petite women out there.

I couldn’t get the videos off the Dorothy Perkins site to let you see them on Yo Shorty, but here is something he did for Indesit moon washing machines. Again I don’t think he’s putting his heart into it like he does on the TV, but they are good tips none the less… oh and before you rush off to get your moon washing machine, I’ve checked the site and they don’t seem to have the competition on there anymore!

Enjoy watching the fabulous Gok Wan and pick up some good tips for dressing to impress as a petite diva!

Don’t forget to comment on what you thought of Gok Wan’s Petite Clothing Tips.

Clothing Alteration services - the petite ladies best friend

By Vikki • Apr 27th, 2008 • Category: All, Alterations, Features

alteration services the petite ladies friend

Hi guys,

So I’ve had a look around and you’ll never guess… apart from Johnsons the Cleaners there is not another UK wide clothing alteration service. Which means that it’s hard for me to review one for you all.

So what’s the point of even starting this post? Well I want you to reccommend an alteration service in your area. Just give us the name and the street that its on and we’ll add it here.

I’ll kick us all of by reccommending Quick Stitch in the north east. They have five stores in the north east and then another in Edinburgh. They’ll hem jeans with the original hem add designer patches to them and then pretty much anything else you could want. Check out their alteration service website by clicking on the link.

So come on I’ve covered off the North East, let us know about your local alteration service and help out other petite ladies in the your area.

Kisses,

Vikki xx

Yo Shorty - catering to the petite lady

By Vikki • Mar 29th, 2008 • Category: All, Features

I’ve just had a thought… after searching around for a bit and speaking to some of the fab online shops that sell petite fashion, I’ve realised that we are one of the few sites dedicated to reviewing Petite clothing!!
Can you believe that! With so many women being under 5′3″ I can’t believe that Yo Shorty is the only site that does this.
Oh well I suppose I should just keep going as I am then! After all what would you all do if I wasn’t here to trawl the internet looking for the best petite clothing?
Vikki

Hi, I’m Petite Vikki

By Vikki • Mar 25th, 2008 • Category: All, Features

So I’ve welcomed you to the site and I thought it was worth me introducing myself. I’m Petite Vikki and I’m the one who got so sick of their being no sites dedicated to Petite Fashion I made a blog myself… and you never know, one day it might flurish into a fully fledged website! (update - I made it into a real website earlier than I thought… I think it looks really cool!)
My mission is to get a listing on here for every petite clothing range online. I might die doing it, but it’ll all be worth it if I can know deep down that I’ve helped the little people - bum, bum… that was a joke! I’m sorry but you must have a sense of humor to come to a site called yo shorty in the first place right?
Other than shopping I love watching soaps, and programmes like Dancing on Ice and Strictly Come Dancing. So if something goes on in Hollyoaks or another programme I like you might see a post on here about that too!
Oh and shoes, and belts and accessories, I love them… they always fit! So if I see something nice on my hunt I’ll add it in here too.
So, like I said if you have a question please don’t hesitate to drop me an email to vikki(at)yo-shorty.co.uk
Lots of love,
Vikki xx

Welcome to Yo Shorty

By Vikki • Mar 25th, 2008 • Category: All, Features

Yo Shorty Brand

Here at yo shorty we are sick of looking for petite clothing and finding the dregs of fashion. We want petite everything… oh and did I say we really hate all the tall models who parade clothing around that we would love to have but are just too short to wear.

We also understand that petite is not a set measurement. I’m the same hight as my sister give or take a centimeter (well, more like take away a centimeter) and you know what… my bum is about 2 inches lower than hers!

I know I’m a freak! I sometimes have to take trousers up by 6 inches… and then normal tops are a little too short. Just goes to show not all petites are the same. Me I’m a petite trouser girl, my friend Shaz is a petite lady all over and can’t for the life of her find size 6 petite clothing.

My mother is a size 20 and is just over 5 foot, so she is looking for plus size petite clothing. My Nanna is under five foot and can’t find fashionable petite clothing for the over fifties. My sister has a big chest and a small torso… where can she find petite fitted tops? No where… until now!

I’m going to make it my mission to find all of the petite clothing ranges online and blog about them for women who like all good things come in small packages - what a cliche, I love it!

Oh and if I miss something out please let me know vikki(at)yo-shorty.co.uk

Cheers me dears, I hope you enjoy this blog… oh and if you don’t want to miss anything then subscribe to my RSS feed. It’s an easy way to keep up to date on the latest petite fashion.
